The “Oh God” Situation Going Into Sunday

In many ways, Sunday is a terrifying game if you’re a Seattle Seahawks fan.

Matt Hasselbeck, the leader of this offense for nearly the past decade, will sit with a concussion. Charlie Whitehurst, aka Clipboard Jesus, will get the start. Whitehurst has never thrown an NFL pass.

Protecting his blind side will be either Tyler Polumbus, a former journeyman offensive tackle who was cut by two teams before the start of the 2010 season, or Chester Pitts, a veteran guard seeing his first start since recovering from microfracture surgery last season. Polumbus will be a game time decision, with Pete Carroll cheerfully referring to Russell Okung as “about as doubtful as you can get” heading into the game.

The Seahawks are expected to activate practice-squad QB Zac Robinson to the 53-man active roster, providing insurance for Whitehurst against the Giants’ destructive pass rush.

On a happier note, Walter Thurmond, Kelly Jennings, Brandon Mebane and Mike Williams all returned to practice today, and should be good to go for the weekend. Colin Cole will be missing several weeks with an ankle injury (not good), but newly-signed DT Frank Okam looks like a good fill-in. Okam could fill in for either Cole or Red Bryant, who was placed on injured reserve this week.

On even happier news, the 12th Man has recorded exactly 99 false start penalties at Qwest Field. Look for them to get the big 100 on Sunday afternoon against Eli and Big Blue.
