I say we focus on Bell if he is what the front office wants, and Bodden for sure as he is impressive and would surely be an improvement and Wilson would be a great nickle. Our CB situation would be set for a few years if we brought him in.
If we wait on Marshal he may fall in our lap but if we press I don't see it being all that great in terms of spent value on him.

I wouldn't mind getting Marshall for pick 40 since we may very well go WR at that point anyway. If we do trade one of our firsts for him I'm sure we can also get a third or fourth coming our way from Denver also.

Okay so how I see it is that I am sure that Pete carroll and co. can cover the WR, RB, Cornerback, in free agency and they need to cover Quarterback, Left Tackle, and Saftey in the draft.

interesting FA impact on the top of the draft
written by Hawksince77, March 07, 2010
FA has had some impact on the top of the draft, directly affecting who might be there at 6. Assuming no major trades in the top 5, and assuming that Seattle retains number 6, it might work out something like this:

1 - the Rams are positioning themselves to draft a QB, probably Bradford after signing Feely, cleary a back up and not a starter.

2 - Detroit has signed two D-linemen, and they really need help protecting Stafford, so Okung seems very likely here (again, assuming no trade, and now Detroit has an incentive not to trade, with the opportunity to take the best LT in the draft).

3 - Tampa takes about 10 seconds to select Suh.

4 - Washington drafts Clausen. I think this is very very likely.

5 - what do the Chiefs do? Some people have them taking Berry, lots think they need help protecting their multi-million dollar QB so think Buluga or Davis here.

What does that leave at 6? Gerald McCoy. Selecting McCoy at 6, and Brown at 14 would make for a helleva first round for Seattle (assuming they don't give up 14 for Marshall).

On the Brandon Marshall topic, what are the chances the Hawks trade back in the draft with the 6th for another first and say a 3rd. For the sake of conversation we trade 6 for 12 and 76. At that point we could sign Marshall and only have to give away the 12th and we get an additional third...Essentially we are trading a first rounder for Marshall and the 76th. That would be great for us.

I think if we pick up Bodden in FA, we do not want to spend a 1st or second round on a Safety in the Draft because with all of the holes we have, we need to fill one for each aspect of the game besides Linebackers. I think if we get a good safety or corner we have done well. The D line must be addressed but I think it needs to happen with DT, not DE. Jason Pierre-Paul only had six sacks last year at a position that should pick up more sacks than DT. Brian Price Sacked the opposing QB 7 times. A Brian Price and Mebane would help collapse the pocket on just about every single Pass Play. This would free up space for Tapp and Jackson, and the aging Kerney.
We need one of each of these at starting caliber next season from this offseason. DB (either corner or safety maybe one of each but start with one), DL, WR, Big Running Back (not another small one as Forsett can take more carries than he has been given), OT, and a replacement for Hasselbeck.

If we take Charles Brown at # 14 our o-line could shift and look pretty good with some competition. Left to Right could be (Brown, Sims, Unger, Spencer or (Willis Drafted as a Gaurd), Locklear or (Frye did ok as a LT for three games).)
I think that could surely work until next year.

If we do not pick up Marshal this is what would be great.

Free agency: Bodden at Corner, Mike Bell as a Big RB
We need to find a WR that does not cost a 1st rounder.

Draft
#6 Clausen or Bradford
#14 (Trade back and aquire a second or third) Charles Brown
#40 Brian Price
4th Major Wright
5th WR
6th BPA
7th BPA
Any compensatory picks BPA

I don't think it works that way. If Seattle signs the offer sheet, it's for the 6th pick. But it doesn't sound like that's really on the table so probably moot.

Jon B,

What do you do if Clausen, Bradford, Okung, and Suh are off the board, along with the second rated LT?

And no way Brian Price doesn't make it out of the first round as the 3rd rated DT. Plus, hopefully Seattle doesn't have a second round pick after Marshall joins the team...
Double negatives...
written by Hawksince77, March 07, 2010
...meaning I don't think Price makes it out of the first round.

And to answer my own question, I draft Berry or McCoy at 6 and leave happy.

I think that if we are going to trade back, If you look at the Point value chart we need to pick up somewhere from 12 to 16 and get the second along with it. Sure trading back farther is not good, but if the chart is at all close to the way teams actually trade which it is somewhat close we could basically get number 12 and 43. 12 and 43 would be the only one that takes more from us, say a back up player that Miami would want. 13 and 49 is the next spot back and we would be ahead according to the chart on that trade or any other which means that we would get extra on top of a first and second, again probably back up players, but that is ok. Just saying we should not settle for 1st and 3rd when you can get 1st and 2nd.

written by Jon B, March 07, 2010
I would also draft Berry or Mccoy given that likelyhood and would rather have Mccoy than either QB anyway.

I did it without Marshal because it is not a gaurantee. Neither are the other FAs but I was just saying I would be unwilling to give up a first because the market and his attitude does not warrent that.
I would love him as a player but we are not in the position to be paying to high a price for players in the situation Seattle is in.

Also, What about Dan Williams and Jared Odrick

I agree, with Hawksince. The lions will actually do the smart thing and draft Okung. The way it looks right now, we will have a shot at Suh or McCoy depending on who Tampa views is a better fit for their D. If they go back to the Tampa 2 defense they will draft McCoy if they stay in a non tampa 2 4-3 its Suh. Both are two of the best prospects to come out at DT in years and its actually pretty close to who is actually considered the top dog.

If Okung is gone you can bet on the Skins taking whichever QB is still on the board.

Kansas City will not draft a DL with a top 5 pick for the third year in a row. Its not going to happen with Scott Pioli in charge. They need to protect their misplaced investment in Matt Cassel for at least another year before they figure out trading for him was a HUGE mistake. I see them taking Campbell or Bulaga. Berry or Haden is unlikely but it still could happen.

I do like the idea of McCoy (who I like more than Suh anyway) and Charles Brown in the first. McCoy could take over as the 3 tech and Mebane could move back to being the NT where he had greater success anyway. Brown is perfect for the ZBS and for what I hear is a very polished player; technique served Walter Jones thru his distinguished career and Brown may be the most techniqually sound players in this draft.

I'm sure Hawthorne has trade value if we want to send him somewhere wheter as a package deal or just by himself. Hes useless to us just sitting on the bench anyway.
...
written by Jon B, March 07, 2010
Hawthorne has value. I truly believe if we looked for a trade partner, (which Im not sure we should or that I would want to at all), that we could get a late second or early third for him alone.
What do you guys think
...
written by omar little, March 07, 2010
I'd trade Hawthorne in a heartbeat, he is going to waste here on the bench and while he is a good commodity if Tatupu goes down a second or third rounder is pure gold for us right now. Especially in a class so deep in corners or safetys, we could get a potential starter. There are a lot of 3-4 teams looking for an inside backer that would probably trade for him.

Maybe we can package him with Branch and a later round pick for Marshall. I know they probably won't go for it but you never know.

If Seattle figures out how to fix the line without drafting an OT at 14 then Earl Thomas (S) would be a solid pick. I would also consider Spiller at that point, again, assuming an LT doesn't need to be taken there.

I wouldn't be surprised if we are trying to use Kerney as trade bait. We have a good stock of young talented DE's and we need to get something for Kerney while we still can.

Perhaps the Hawks could work the deal with Denver to be next year's 2nd moving to next year's 1st pick if Marshall isn't suspended for any reason. That leaves all the picks available for this year's draft that is deep and we could address the missing pieces.

And am I alone in thinking LaFeavor would be a good choice at 4 if available, or at 3 if the hawks trade back in the first and pick up a third?
...
written by Jon B, March 07, 2010
I truly believe that if we are not going to take an elite QB in the draft, or cant. We should not take another mid to late round pick on one. We still have last years 6th rounder Teel. We already have a project if that is the way the team wants to go. I would rather not have a wasted pick on our second or third project QB in the last few years. If we are not wanting to try to train our current project why would another one work.
...
written by omar little, March 07, 2010
LaFeavor has been called this years Joe Flacco but I don't know much about him beyond that. I do know he plays in one of those goofy college offenses so hes a project for sure.

Anyone know anything about that Skelton guy? I've seen his name thrown around a few times before but IDK much about him, or what kind of offense he played in college.

Jon B-

I agree with you and say that is probably going to happen anyways. Schneider's philosophy is to take QB's every draft, develop them and them trade them away. That's what they did in GB and it worked out well for them. Obviously they saw their future with Rodgers and held onto them, but if I remember correctly they drafted Rodgers in the first round and them Brian Brohm in the 2nd.
...
written by omar little, March 07, 2010
Brohm actually got cut. Last I saw he was playing for the Bills. But I see you point, don't forget about Matt Flynn either they drafted him in the 6th or 7th the same year they got Brohm.

written by Jon B, March 07, 2010
Yeah maybe cts
But a second rounder is not nearly the project if they are worthy of going in the second. After the first ten picks QBs drop off, then at the end of round 1 there is drop off. At the end of round two you have the same thing. After that you can get a player that is worth about the same at the QB possition any time in the draft. Top ten elite, 1st consistently good, 2nd still pretty good, 3rd could be good with work, 4th and throughout, not very likely to be good but there is a chance.
Schneider comes from that background, but he takes the very good and good. Not the ones that have a small chance of being good in my opinion.

I love the sound of that for those picks. But I rather get a DE at 6th because I think that is alittle to high for him. And if we get Marshall our 40th pick will most likley be gone but then again we could try and trade seneca for a 3rd and get quarterback Jarret Brown instead of Tebow.

Here is what I hope happens:

We trade Hawthorne and Branch for Marshall. This allows us to keep our draft picks and get rid of players who will not play for us.

We sign Bodden as an unrestricted FA. This is where Paul Allen's money will come in handy.

Trade Seneca to the Browns for Derek Anderson. If we can't get a high end QB in this draft, I think we have a very capable back up who may just shine in Seattle if Hass gets hurt.

With the 6th overall pick, we pick up McCoy (I'm a Suh fan, but don't think he will make it past the Bucs).

With the 14th pick, we trade back a few spots say to 17 or 18 and maybe pick up another 3rd or 4th rounder. With the 17th/18th pick, we pick up Iupati.

At 40, we pick up the best remaining LT. Some boards had Charles Brown falling into the early 2nd round - I'm not sure that happens, but there is enough LT talent in this draft that we would still get value in the early 2nd round.

With the 3rd that we may pick up by dropping back from 14, we pick the best available running back.

In the 4th round, we grab one of the QBs who will fall. Pike did nothing for himself at the combine and could free fall. I see him as a very good project that may pan out in a couple of years. Regardless, we have Hass backed up by Anderson, and we let Pike and Teal fight for the 3rd QB position.

Anyways, that's what I'd like to see.

Heres what I hope happens:

1. Gerald McCoy
1A. Charles Brown
2. Nate Allen or Morgan Burnett
4. Mike Johnson

After that you just gotta go with the best players on the board. I think we sould also see some comp picks coming our way hopefully we get one at the end of the third to get Hardesty.

I almost guarantee we do not get a 3rd from compository. We did not loose much in free agency last year. We lost a lot of players but none of them were starters on there new teams I do not believe. We lost like seven and gained two in FA last year. I see us picking up a few 7s like we did last year.

6) McCoy/Berry

No way....we will sit back and let the bengals deflate the value of T.O. by using Marshall talk. Then once the Bengals sign T.O. we will have all the leverage.

The Bengals have an agenda too. They want T.O. for the right price. If our front office is smart, they would call the Bengals and find out.
...
written by Highlander, March 08, 2010
I had the same thought Recordblender. And I imagine the Hawks are playing the same game...waiting for the Bengals to pick up T.O. which will remove some of what leverage Denver has.
Denver keeps pretending that they're happy to go into next season with Marshall on their team...but I read he turned down a 9.5 mill/yr deal with them because he wants to play somewhere else.
Are we to believe they really want to go into this year with a disgruntled Marshall?

I still think the top the Hawks should offer is next year's 1st round with the provision that if he's suspended for any reason during the year it drops to a 2nd rounder.

This is a cat and mouse game. To the patient go the spoils. If Seattle can contain thier eagerness to land Marshall, I doubt anyone else goes after him. There's no way Cincy will offer a first AND a huge contract. Even if they do, all Seattle has to do is tell Marshall and his agent that they will make him the highest paid WR in the league and beat any teams guaranteed money, and theres no way Marshall agrees to be traded to anyone else.

Marshall IS a headcase as well, and teams know it.

If Denver has patience, which I think they do, they will wait and wait, dropping rumors and spreading BS in an attempt to drive the price up for Marshall. They wont trade Marshall until right before the draft.

I still think we will get him for less than a first round pick. Not one trade for a WR that involved a first round pick worked out in my memory. Still, he's a monster talent and Seattle may not want to risk losing him...

One thing is sure, other teams will attempt to drive the price up for Marshall to prevent us from getting him cheap. Denver will do whatever they can to do the same...rumors will fly, and things will be interesting for sure.

omar little: I don't see why Denver would go for that provision with the pick dropping to a second if Marshall gets suspended. What benefit would they get out of that?
____________________

They would benefit in a couple of ways. Firstly, they won't have to deal with Marshall any longer and he's obviously on their last nerve in regards to him.
Secondly, it's looking like no team is going to offer them a first round pick for him...so by offering a 2nd that will probably become a first next year they save face in getting the first they are bluffing to hold out for.

This is where the league's poor thoughts about the Hawks might play in our favor. I saw one sports pundit say he thought the Hawks were going to win no more than 5 games this year, another said maybe 8 games. If Denver holds the same view then they would stand to obtain a high draft pick next year once they understand they're not going to get the 6 pick from Seattle.
