Rounding up the Mocks  E-mail

The NFL Combine gets started this week, and plenty of nobodies will become "future stars" while a few can't-misses will become mid-round disappointments... The mock drafts really start coming together after the combine -- will Taylor Mays save his draft stock or plummet to the middle of the 2nd round, will Carlos Dunlap be exposed for the average player with character issues that he is or look like the stud his body suggests he should be, et cetera. I figured it was worth one more look prior to all the changes though, so here we go:

  • As always, we start with friend of the blog Rob Staton's most recent mock draft, where he's got Sam Bradford going first overall to the Rams. I could see that. I think Rob has got OT Anthony Davis going a bit too high, but I would have said that about Jason Smith at this point last year, too. Of course, I still think Jason Smith went too high, but that's not really the point.
  • Matt McGuire over at Walter Football updated his mock draft today, and he has the Rams opting to go with Jimmy Clausen, while the first tackle off the board goes to the Chiefs at #5 (Russell Okung).
  • Over at DraftSeason they've got a new mock up which seems pretty good. It's funny how the Chiefs are such wildcards this year, with just about everyone going a different direction; they've got them taking Okung again, which makes this not a great place to bring this up, but I've seen them taking 7 or 8 different guys.
  • Of course, the best place to check for recent mock drafts is DC Pro Sports Report. They update their database of mock drafts daily, and recently expanded from the top 5 picks to the top 10 picks, so you can immediately compare all 289 (and counting) of their posted drafts. It's a daily read for me.
Feel free to link to your favorite mock draft, or talk about who we should or shouldn't draft. I'm still working on finding an effective work around at work so I am not fully deprived of the site. I've been waking up early just for you guys!

As I was reading some of these mocks I realized that, even though I didn't think the same way about who we will pick, we are going to get three important pieces for our team either way. The draft seems deep in talent, what a great time for the extra #1 pick. We have HOPE!!

I just hope we dont draft a qb in the first round. I am not sold on any qb this draft, just noticed that we have 4 et games this year, way to go goodell.

Todd McShay’s recently updated mock draft looks good. As of 02/22/10 he has the following:

Suh – Rams
Gerald McCoy – Lions
Eric Berry – Tampa
Jimmy Clausen – Redskins
Anthony Davis – Chiefs
Sam Bradford – Seahawks

I’m surprised that Anthony Davis is shooting up the draft that fast. It must be the “similar to Walter Jones” comment. At that point, Seattle would have the choice of Bradford or Okung. If both players are available, it would be a hard decision. Personally, I would go after Okung. It is easier to find a QB in the later rounds then a good LT.

I’m starting to wholeheartedly believe the Rams will not pick a QB, because they will end up with Vick. Believe it or not, I think they will be a dangerous team with Vick and Jackson in the backfield.

I see some mocks have Eric Berry going to the Seahawks. I hope that is the case.

I personally would LOVE to see us trade down a couple of times to get as many picks as possible to take full advantage of this strong draft. We may not be in this draft position for a long time. (hopefully)

I could see Clausen going to us at #6 and then Bulaga at #14. I love Hass but we all need to come to reality that he is approaching the end of his year and this is his contract year. He can teach Clausen the ropes this last year and if the Hawks want to keep Hass around for another year they will franchise him next year or work out a two-three year contract similar to Warner. After the next year or so. Clausen will be ready to take over. I just don't see Teel or Wallace the future of the Hawks.
Please no Eric Berry!
written by TheRealist, February 22, 2010
A player like Berry makes a lot of sense for a team that is set at the big positions. But a team like the Hawks, with a very bleak future at QB, LT and DE simply does not have the luxury of taking a safety with a high pick. Before you get a great safety, you need to be able to throw, protect the QB and get to the opposing QB. The hawks do none of that well, and therefore those key areas, absolutely essential to success at football, must be addressed first.

As phenomenal a talent as Berry is, the hawks cannot afford to take him at 6. They have far too many more crucial needs.

My very own seattle seahawks mock draft smilies/smiley.gif

1st #6- QB Jimmy Clausen Notre Dame
* Matt Hasselbeck is obviously ageing and without a oline
he is not the same as he used to be, we need to get our
franchise QB and have him learn behind matt for a year
atleast

1st #14- OT Trent Williams Oklahoma
*big school, one of the best prospects, 6-5 318 first team
all american, no way pete and co. can pass on him.

2nd #40- DT Terrence Cody Alabama
*Another big school, has alot of expierence, and obviously
we need the threat pass rusher, could be a real steal at
#40.

4rd #105- RB LeGarrette Blount Oregon
*I think Blount his very underated but his stock could get
raised till draft time, but he would fit fine in our system
with him and forsett with a 1-2 punch

5th #141- S Terrel Skinner Marland
*Not a bad senior game, but could raise is stock, he is a
big saftey that we could use.

6th #179- OG Jeff Byers USC
*USC guy, I cant see pete and co. pass on him

7th #217- CB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah Indiana (Pa.)
*The only negative about this is that it may be a small school
but he has great size, 6'1 205 pounds, we really need him
to survive in our division.

I LOVE the Walterfootball mock draft. Berry is an ideal playmaking safety to help our terrible secondary, and i believe that Buluga will end up being the best tackle in this draft. I also like the Matthews pick at 40 as opposed to taking Spiller at 14. I would be very happy for the hawks to pick up Charles Scott too. I think he is VERY underrated, and i really like what he could do in our ZBS system.

I would be very surprised if Schnieder didn't trade down a few times in this draft to get more picks. I'd like to see us get back into the 3rd round, and maybe even make a move to get another 1st next year.
...

I think that if Bradford or Clausen is still there at 6 then we could probably trade down with denver to #11 pick and acquire a 2nd round pick in the process. Denver needs a QB more than the hawks do, with only Kyle Orton(restricted free agent) and Chris Simms on the roster. They have shown a willingness to move up in the past, and with 2 1st round picks, they wouldn't feel bad about giving up a 2nd rounder to facilitate a trade. We could possibly even swing a 3rd rounder + Brandon Marshall to move down 5 spots. And at that spot, we would still be able to draft Buluga, and an impact defensive player or Playmaking Offensive player.
...

So my ideal situation would be this:

trade #6 to denver for the #11 pick and Brandon Marshall

#11 Draft Brian Buluga - T - Iowa

#14 Draft Earl Thomas -S- Texas

#40 Draft Brandon Grahmn -DE- Michigan

Round 4 Draft Brandon Ghee -CB- Wake Forrest

Round 5 Draft Charles Scott -RB- LSU

Trade round 6 pick + Deion Branch to Patriots for G Logan Mankins

Round 7 Draft Best Player Available

sign UFA Toby Gerhart

This way we address most of our major needs, with the only flaw being having to wait until next year to Address the QB situation.

No way the Hawks can pas up another QB this year, I would Rather have either Bradford or Clausen start next year for us then A Jack Locker as a Rookie

Only problem with Graham is that he is undersized and projects to more of a tweener. He's a better fit as an OLB in a 3-4 and really is not what we are looking for.

I'm not sold on these QB's either. IF we were to take one I'd hope it's Bradford. I love him minus his shoulder and is my only knock on the guy. So if he is there and the FO likes him enough I wouldn't bitch too much.

I would love Bulaga at #14, he embarrassed Morgan in the Orange Bowl and has been solid all year.

The Seahawks NEED a quarterback and there are two talented quarterbacks in Bradford and Clausen, Bradford being the better of the two.

The Seahawks can keep hasselbeck with a new two year extention but he needs to restructure his contract because he's not worth 8-10 million.

Here's how it should go for seattle.

No. 6 QB Sam Bradford

No. 14 either DE Jason Pierre Paul, CB Joe Haden (if he's there), S Earl Thomas or Dez Bryant

No. 40 S Nate Allen/OT Charles Brown

written by Hawksince77, February 22, 2010
A couple of predictions:

1) Bradford won't be available at 6. If Seattle wants him, they will likely have to trade up.

2) the Haitian Sensation will be over-valued based on his athleticism. He is not worth taking at 14 IMO.

3) Haden will be long gone by 14, as will Bryant. Thomas should be there, though.

4) I doubt Brown makes it to 40.

If I am right, instead of drafting a QB at 6, take Haden or Bryant.

If Berry is there when the hawks draft, they have to pick him. He is a defensive play maker like we have not seen (lately).

Its a good thing I am not a GM, because I will admit that emotion gets the best of me, but after just watching a clip of Tebow on ESPN throwing correctly I am intrigued. I am not a Tebow expert, but as far as I know his only major downside is throwing the ball from the hip. Other than that the guy has an amazing work ethic, passion for the game, leadership skills, and will push himself to the limit in order to win. I dont know if its fixable, but if the Hawks brass see that they can put him behind Matt for a year or so to fix his throwing mechanics, and we can get him in the early 2nd round (probably to risky in the 1st round), then we just might have our future QB, and can also use two 1st round picks on other needs. The guy has been on top of the world and I have never seen his ego grow larger than life, and that goes a long way in my book, and he has always had the fire to get better no matter how many trophys or champions he has won. I would rather have a Tebow that I can coach how to throw and who has passion for the game than a Pacman Jones who has all the talent in the world, but doesnt give a f*** about anybody but himself.

I keep reading post that say "finding a QB in the later rounds is much easier than finding a LT" First off I would like to see some proof of that. Second off, teams that have franchise QB (mostly high drafted) have been far more successful than teams with "Pro-Bowl" LT's. That being said the Hawks cannot pass on the opportunity to get the future QB, and the idea that we can just wait for Locker next year is crazy, we don't know what picks we will have next year, we don't know if Locker will tank it next year, we don't know if Locker will have a serious injury next year. You can't count on next years draft you have to get the best you can NOW.

Just my admittedly non professional opinion.

NW Pride-

I was listening to KJR this morning and they were talking about Tebow changing how he throws and one of the guys brought up a great point about that. I can't remember who was talking about it, but he pointed out that no matter how much training you do, when you are in the heat of the moment, scrambling in the pocket being chased down by big linemen he will revert back to his old style of throwing. It's called muscle memory. Just too much of a risk if you ask me. Maybe in the 5th for me. I'd rather take a chance on the likes of LaFavour, Skelton or Snead.

cts,

You make a great point, and can see where if the muscle memory doesnt get him, then habit will, and those are always hard to break. I will admit that I was hatin on Tebow, but seeing his passion and dedication to the game is pretty amazing that I hope regardless what position he plays he plays. I think he will be good for the game. Im glad I am not the one picking, because choosing a franchise QB can be a career beginner or killer as a GM. Lets just hope its a beginning for the Hawks.

I hear ya. I don't think that it will be much of an issue anyways. Where I don't think Jax is seriously considering him in the 1st like a lot think they are, I do think that they will probably strongly consider him in the 2nd and if they pass on him and he falls they definately nab him in the 3rd.
