Pete Carroll has snagged another USC coach for the Seahawks coaching staff. The latest addition is 33-year old Rocky Seto, the 2009 secondary coach and a long-time USC assistant. He will serve the Seahawks as a Defensive Quality Control Assistant. Last year, Seto turned down Sarkisian's offer to become defensive coordinator at the UW. Welcome, Rocky!

Brian McIntyre points out that this is the 7th assistant coach who has spent time at USC at one point or another under Carroll.

USC-hawks

We have to be setting a record for most coaches on one team...
Its alot of eggs in one basket....

I understand what he is trying to do. When something has worked so well for him in years past at USC he is trying to bring aboard all those coachs that helped him mold and shape that organization, but I hope that this doesn't back fire in his face. Look at Mora, He had success with Knapp in Atlanta and brought him in and what happened?

I do think it also shows that he "Carrol" really does want every single square inch of this team covered from back to front. He wants deep evaluation of his players and who he wants to draft, and carrol wants to make sure that they are getting coached in every single way to be successful!

I Look forward to next year!~
Why Not USC Coaches?
written by LouieLouie, February 02, 2010
USC has been able to recruit the cream of the coaching crop in college football. That is where the cream has wanted to coach. The guy from Tennesee couldn't get out of his contract quickly enough for the chance to coach at USC. Look at what Sark has done at Washington.

Carroll is staffing the Seahawks with up and comming coaches. Great! I like it! I predict that the Pete Carroll coaching tree will sprout head coaches all over the NFL.

The potential up-side to Pete Carroll is frightning. The owner of the Patriots recently said in an article that I read that he's glad that Carroll is in the NFC, because he thinks that Carroll will succeed.

My hope is that a head coach who has learned from his past but is now ready to kick ass in the NFL, has just signed on with a team that has also learned some hard lessons from its past but is now ready to kick ass in the NFL. I can hardly wait.

Coaching limits?
written by jordancda, February 02, 2010
Is there a limit to how many coaches an NFL team can have? I know the NCAA has strict regulations on it and I guess I just always assumed the NFL did too...but it appears as though that's not an issue. Anyone know for sure?

Teamwork

He has a team of coaches he obviously likes. It worked at USC. Why not bring in guys that you know and that you know work well together? The Holmgren era was marked with disent. The Carroll trade mark maybe togetherness. There is the risk that they all think a like but that is better than having alot of unhealthy competition in the coaching staff.

Seems to me that whatever we'd been modeling our team after, if anything, was less successful than modeling ourselves after one of the top college programs might be. I have no problem with keeping our west coast identity either. At work I am surrounded by new and young engineers and it is quite refreshing from the stale status quo that puts tradition ahead of progress.
I'm so happy right now

with the coaching changes. There is a nice mix of experience on the staff. There is real depth at coaching positions.

This is exactly what I was hoping for when the season ended and Mora replacement was being talked about.
Good move

I think it's a great move. For those who think that its "puting all of the eggs in one baskett" as many are from USC its not because most are assistant coaches.

I like the idea of depth at position coaches as long as they can be on the same page. It allows for every player to learn from each coaches strength. Also, if a coach is underperforming, it allows us to cut the dead weight and bring someone else in (or not) without missing a step or having to change direction.

Great move FO.

I'm not necessarily against the move but I'm beginning to wonder if these moves are more about bringing in talented coaches or more to do with others not wanting the job? I know the USC folks are all tight, but I wonder about balance and the ability to challenge each other as coaches. Will all these coaches just continue to be subordinate to Coach Carrol? Or can they make decisions that are best for the organization?
It helps calm me a bit knowing how successful USC was but a lot of this reminds me of Coach Mora bringing in Gregg Knapp. Maybe I'm just worrying too much, but I can't remember ever seeing anything like this...does USC have any coaches left from the Carrol days?

well i guess pete carroll knows he can give all of his friends some good payout with a gig in seattle. what's next? is he going to try to sign on the trojan mascot as an assistant of player personnel quality control for special and unique game time situations? i understand the importance of bringing in good coaches, but who is this guy and wtf is his job here?

This "guy" was USC's Defensive Coordinator last year. Having a former DC as your Quality Control coach is pretty decent.

Yeah, but the guys we brought in last year didn't exactly have the best track record, especially Knapp. The difference is that these guys are winners and their track records show that.

I think bringing in guys you are use can be a better thing. There is less of a transition and the quicker the staff can transition the less of an issue it is with the players.

Not only are these assistant coaches winners, they are, by and large, young up and comers, as opposed to old has-beens and never-were's like Greg Knapp.

The USC coaches are apples to Knapps orange. Knapp was allready a major failure in Oakland before coming here. He had nothing new to offer, and that was fairly obvious to everyone except Mora and Ruskell. THe USC coaches are all young hardworking innovators. They may struggle, but they wont be using 10-15 year old philosophies and game plans either.

No matter if they fail next year--they are bound to be a steep improvement over Knapp!

Plus, Caroll didnt build such a dynasty at USC by hiring yes-men and toadies. He won consistently by continually replacing coaches who moved on and up with talented, hardworking young coaches. Just like he's doing here.

I know Mora made us all gunshy, but come on! Carol's staff allready looks leaps and bounds better than Mora's. Give him the benefit of the doubt--at least until he loses more than 7 games!

Not only that, but I think Caroll is stocking his staff with young assistants (and assistants to assistants) as a way to prepare for his under-coaches moving on and up. Caroll has plenty of faith in his underlings, and I think he's looking to the future and preparing his assistant coaching succession plan.

So my bet is these guys are all first-rate talent coaches who just need some experience.
