Combine: Hawks meet with Brown  E-mail

A little bit of Combine news on the slowest day of said event: The Seahawks have reportedly met with USC offensive tackle Charles Brown. Brown is probably the most obvious fit into our zone blocking scheme, and there was good news all around when he weighed in today: first, he surpassed the 300 lb barrier that many feared he would not -- Brown weighed in at 303 lbs. His height is listed at 6'5" (and 3/8). Perhaps most importantly though, are his arms.

Brown's arms weighed in at a very long 35 1/4". That's phenomenal. Offensive tackles need to have long arms almost as much as they need to be dirtbags. Most starting tackles have at least 33" arms, which is sort of the over/under number people look for. Short arms leave tackles vulnerable to defenders, allowing them to get into the tackle's chest and gain leverage and control. Brown's very long arms and athletic nature could help craft him into a star under Alex Gibbs' tutelage.

The bad news is that the Seahawks will almost certainly not have a chance at him in the #40 slot, so it'll almost have to be that #14 pick now. It's probably worth it!

The good news about Brown weighing in at 303 is there will be a lot of OTs worthy of the #14 pick. I read that Bruce Campbell and Anthony Davis also looked very good at weigh-in. When you put Davis, Campbell and Brown with Okung, Bulaga, and Williams, there are a number of good OT prospects. Considering the strength of the DT class this year, it should be a near certainty that at least one top OT prospect will still be on the board at #14. I think that this should allow the Hawks to take BPA at #6, and still be fairly confident that they will get a LT 8 picks later. As much as we need a LT, I would hate to see them reach at #6 if there are better prospects still on the board. The team has too many needs to ignore best player available, be that LT, S, CB, DE, or QB-of-the-future.

That being said, a lot can still happen between now and the draft. Just because these guys look good at weigh-in doesn't mean they will inverview well, perform well in drills, or display the strength or speed the scouts desire.

Hey Chris... Do you think he is worth the #14 pick though? I wonder if Baluga is at that spot if we should take him? Not sure if Brown is worth the #14 pick. I wonder if he is just the pick we may take in the second round if for some reason he is available or if we trade picks with someone and get a later first round pick or a earlier second round pick.

Not sure if Brown is worth #14 either.
I believe that the team must address its offensive line if it wants to be competitive, but their draft picks must have appropriate value.
The team is meeting with many OL prospects, not just Brown.

My thought is that if we are interviewing him, it is because we are hoping to trade back and pick him up with whatever pick we secure later in the first round. Although he might not be the best OT in the draft, he would be an improvement over what we have available to us currently. Thoughts???
I'm interested to see his bench press numbers

From what I have heard/read Buluga has short arms. Any thoughts? Has he measured yet?

At pick 6 I would take the best Defensive palyer available. Suh, Mccoy, Morgan, Berry in that order. With Suh and Mccoy off the board. I would pick D. Morgan with the 6 pick. Maybe trade down from 6 to 8 and pick up 2nd or 3rd round in the process. I would not wait until 14 to pick D line because the elite ones will be gone by then. At 14 I would take the best LT available. Brown is worthy of a 14h pick. He has alot of upside for the future and could also play next year, giving Matt a instant boost in protection. Okung will be gone, Bruce Cambell is injury prone, Davis is great but still a lil raw to start next year. Buluga has shotr arms and is a tad slow for his smaller size, Charles Brown will be the best all around LT available when we pick at 14. Not to mention, PC knows him well and is a typical Gibbs zone blocking lineman.

6. Trade down to 8 or 9 for a 2nd or 3rd rd pick before the jags because they could pick a DE.

9. D. Morgan
14. Charles Brown.
40. Best WR available
3rd Best DB available
4th Best DT available
5th Lagerrette Blount RB

Brown won't fall past pick 20 (Green Bay and Houston both need LTs). I've said it before and I'll say it again, if Jordan Gross went top 10 at 300 lbs, Brown will be a surefire first rounder. Gross is a prety good LT in the league and Brown is better than Gross when he came out and has more upside than Gross had.

I'd still prefer Campbell at 6, as I see him being the best LT from the draft 2 years down the line. Campbell is just as athletic as Brown is and is much bigger, probally around the 320 range.

I don't think Okung will fall past Kansas City and I'll be VERY surprised if he is still on the board at 6.

Campbell's and Okung's arms are even longer than Brown's. 36+ inches!

published today, has McCoy falling to us at 6. That would be a true no-brainer.

Mr. Little, Cambell is great but his past injuries are just to big of a risk. If Cambell proves that his injuries are cured then I would take him at 14 otherwise Brown is the choice.

If by the grace of god Gerald McCoy is there at 6, for God's sake take him! I like him more than I do Suh.

McCoy is just about even with Suh as of now IMO, but McCoy is 2 or 3 years younger and Suh has had two knee operations while in college. That could lead to issues as he gets older. McCoy would allow us to move Mebane back to his natural spot, and would really let us have two talented DTs to collapse the pocket. QBs won't have a pocket to step into to buy time from our edge rushers, something I noticed happened far too many times last season.

Is there a list anywhere that is keeping track of who each team visits with??? I know interviews aren't much, it's all part of the process, but just curious.

If Carroll and Schneider think that Brown is worth the #14 pick, he is. I'll believe them more than Kiper, McShay or the dozens of fans who follow the draft. People thought Polian was crazy for taking Edgerin James when Ricky Williams was still on the board, but he wasn't. He knew what kind of back would work the best in his system, and he proved a lot of people wrong. If our FO feels as if Brown's skill set is the perfect fit for their scheme, he will be worth #14.

Lenny,

I think Morgan at #6 is a mistake and if you are going BPA at #6 then it would be Berry. He is argueably the best player in the draft. Morgan has the reputation of getting beat by good LT's like how he got completely shut down by Bulaga in the Orange Bowl. All he'll see is the next teir of LT's in the NFL. That's a huge risk to me and I'd rather go with a less risk in Berry or Haden.

Something tells me that Brown is either a smoke screen or a possible #40/trade up pick. I truly think they are targeting 1-2 guys at #6 and maybe a couple more at #14. I see Brown as more of a contingency plan, however, his increase in size makes him very intriguing. I guess we'll see if that weight gain will hinder his athleticism and quickness a bit.

If Carroll and Co. think that Brown is the best LT available for the system that they plan to run, then Brown should be #14. If Bulaga is the best LT available, in their estimation, then Bulaga should be taken at 14. It doesn't look like there is much chance that Brown will be available at #40.

It might be possible to trade #14 back into a later first round pick, it still wouldn't guarantee Brown would be avaialable.

We need a QB, and at #6 one of the two top prospects will most likely be available.

Omar,
either you never really watched Suh play or you're just on some really good drugs because Suh is by far more dominant and a way better talent than McCoy or anyone else in this draft. I haven't seen someone of his caliber at that position since Cortez. McCoy is just a fat tub of Lars that can't get up field and gets blocked easily when he is double teamed. Go watch the tape of both those guys and then tell me that McCoy is near the player Suh is.

If Bradford is there at #6 and health checks out we have to grab him or let someone trade up with us that wants him so we can recover a 2nd/3rd along with that teams 1st. No Clausen at 6, maybe 14. If he isn't and McCoy is there, take him. If he isn't then BPA, whether that be DE, DT, CB, WR, S. At 14 either Clausen if he is the answer or preferably Brown from USC. Matthews from Fresno St at #40 for me at the moment unless there is a steal of a pick there.

i think we should take berry or haden at 6, trade back with our 14 to 19ish and take brown, then take a reciever in the second or myron rolle (if we get haden) if not take a WR tate if hes there or shipley if hes there. in the third take a DT so we can have someone to couple with meebs, in the fourth take another WR, in the fith take RB Ben Tate (look him up hes good) in the sixth take someone that can improve special teams and in the seventh take a QB....
OR
1(6)- haden or berry (probably haden)
1(14) trade back to 19- take bulaga or brown
2 - snead
3 - best safety or WR
4 - best RB
5 - best DT
6 - special teamer or QB
7 - Special teamer or QB

Josh C-

I believe that Suh is the better overall DT, but not by much. McCoy is an absolute beast as well and if you read on him and watch him play you would see what we, and most the experts, see that Suh is not really all that much better than McCoy. Not to mention that they are two completely different types of DT's. Suh is more of a 2 gap power guy who wreck havoc, clogs up the middle and stops the run game. McCoy is more of a 3-tech guy who is very quick and will get to the QB more than Suh will. They are both GREAT in both the pass and run game, but Suh is better in run and McCoy is better rushing the passer. So realistically if St. Louis is looking for a pass rusher, McCoy could very well be the pick over Suh. In fact, it's very realistic and a definate possibility. My guess is that there are 4 prospects they are REALLY looking at at #1 and it's probably Suh, McCoy, Bradford and Clausen.
